So... we secretly did an Embark test and Loki’s results are here! When I got Loki, I was told he was an Australian Shepherd and Border Collie mix. I met his mom, who I was told was a purebred Blue Merle Aussie (and she sure looked it), and was told his dad was half Aussie and half Border Collie... Well, the results are here and while Loki is mostly Aussie at 60.2%, with 24.4% Border Collie, he also has 15.4% of another breed.
So let the guessing games begin on what that 3rd breed is! I will announce the results Monday! In the mean time, I’m going to share some little fun facts from his report: -He (thankfully) cleared all genetic health tests and isn’t a carrier or at risk. This was the thing I wanted to know most. He is neutered so I was more worried about the at risk than carrier. -They give you a “wolfiness” score and Loki is actually above average. As they put it, a higher wolfiness score means your dog has some neat, ancient genetic variants. And that’s pretty cool to me. Although he doesn’t have wolf in any recent lineage, I’ll let that explain his howling, his “wolflike” tail, and that he sheds in tufts like one 😉 -Although his dad seems to be what I was told, it’s his mom that differs. And since his dad was the known mix, I thought it would come from him.
I was skeptical of this test before, but it really is way cool to get to know your dog and their history better. And everything I’ve read from his results make perfect sense to me. Not sure it’s worth $200, maybe it would be if I didn’t know any of his breed info, but I got it on sale and think it’s worth the cheaper price.
