This is part of the serie @vilmarimpela and I produced during our one weeka residency in Matera in April. ————————————————— "Italians, you are too much!" yelled a girl while walking on the streets of Sassi with her friends. It's an inside joke coming from an Italian TV advertisement. They were going to party on this Friday night. "It's so boring over here," said another girl, same age. "There's nothing to do in Matera." She was not into partying.
A lot of young people study or work in other parts of Italy, because the labour market situation in Basilicata is so desperate. During the Easter holidays they return to visit their families and seeing their friends again. Coming back to a home full of contrasts: A city center, stuffed with tourists during the day and a crazy flock of adolescents at night, all accumulating at Via Domenico Ridola. You see a lot of fashion, passion and drama.
The rest of the city center – empty. The outskirts of Matera – completely empty. The rural surrounding – dying out.
During their stay in Matera Victoria Jung and Vilma Rimpelä collaborated to capture the city's young generation and focused on their impression of a place that is too much or not enough. To support this idea of the two extremes of Matera, they decided to combine pictures of two different photography styles, using on one hand a hard frontal flash and on the other the artificial available light situations, documenting the settings they found during the night time. #fhdo_foto #visionsfromeurope #matera2019
