A must do in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for any photography trip is Cades Cove. We arrived about 30 minutes before sunrise and found the gate already open. After making images of sunrise, we started our pursuit of wildlife. There were turkeys everywhere and we eventually found some bears. This little guy is a yearling that had been kicked out this year and was off on his/her own. It was content to forage and snack while we snapped away. A couple of volunteer park rangers hung out with us and did a great job of bear jam management. #GreatSmokyMountainsNationalPark , #GreatSmokyMountains , #GreatSmokyNPS , #SmokyMountains , #GSMNP , #Smokies , #VisitMySmokies #NationalPark , #NationalParkService , #NPS , #CadesCove , #Nature , #NaturePhotography , #52WeeksOfNature , #Wildlife_Inspired , #WildlifePhotography , #WildlifeIG , #WildlifeMag , #Wildlife , #WildlifePlanet , #Exclusive_Wildlife , #World_Wildlife , #NatGeoWild , #Bear , #BlackBear , #AmericanBlackBear , #BlackRapid , #865Life

The Smokies #22 : John Ownby Cabin Do you have cabin fever? This rustic fixer-upper might be the home for you! It's a mid-century (not sure which century though...) design that has been re-modeled, by erosion, to a functional open concept for a minimalist-inclined nature-lover. Located in a great neighborhood. Surrounded by thousands of bears. Wireless connection can be tricky. Photos from this series, along with others, are available as prints. You can check them out on my website: https://bit.ly/2IGqA0z. I can do a variety of sizes, with or without a frame, print or canvas wrap. “Clingmans Dome is a sacred land to the Cherokee, it is where the Magic Lake was once seen. The Great Spirit told the Cherokee that, “if they love me, if they love all their brothers and sisters, if they love all the animals of the earth, when they grow old and sick they can come to a magic lake and be made well again.” For the Cherokee, these mountains have meant a refuge, a homeland, and a spiritual foundation for their people. During the Indian Removal Project and the Trail of Tears the mountains were their place to seek safety from soldiers taking them from their homeland.” The hills and valleys of Shaconage will always be far more than just a landscape and a place to play. The next time you’re in the Smokies take time to learn more about their history, even just a few moments of reading park signs will give you a deeper glimpse into this beautiful land. 💙 *Prints available in my Etsy shop.

At any given moment there are more salamanders in the @greatsmokynps than all mammals combined, including people. You may never see them, but they’re definitely there! I met this little Jordan’s/red-cheeked salamander as I was crossing a footbridge yesterday... He was tucked into a dark hole in a tree, so if it wasn’t for him quietly whispering “Hello Kristi!” as I walked by, I would have went right by him and never even noticed that adorable little face. ❤️

To stand atop the rolling ridges and peaks of Appalachian blues and focus on the darkness, instead of the light - would only make me a fool. Seek beauty. Seek the light. 💙

On Thursday some good friends of ours called and asked if we could come and spend the weekend with them in their house in the mountains. I can tell you there was no need for arm twisting. What a treat. For me it doesn’t get much better than being immersed for a time with mountains, creeks and rivers all around. As nice as it is to be surrounded by God’s handiwork the most important thing is the value of friendship. These friends loved on us by inviting us into their home for the weekend. Loving people well is what Jesus did. When I was as far away from Jesus as I could get my brother Randy, who loved Jesus, would come into town and would spend time with me. You know what he did when we were together? Just hung out! Yeah that’s it! There was no “hey Dan you know you need to give up the drugs and alcohol” talk. There wasn’t any “hey Danny you really need to get in church” stuff. He just wanted to be with me. Sure he wanted to share what the Lord was doing in his life and offer me the hope he had within him but he knew he had to earn my trust first and he did that by loving me well. There isn’t room here for this but please read Luke 5:29-31. For Randy, Jesus was his example. Jesus said, “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”” John‬ ‭13:34-35‬. So how are we doing? How will the world know who we are? Are we building trust with others? Are we loving others well? Wishing each and everyone the best of Sundays! 😊 #gsmnp #smokymountainphotography #greatsmokynps #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #nationalparks #nature_brilliance #naturephotogrqphy #allnatureshots #nanpapix #bestnatureshots #landscapephotography #landscape_captures #explore #outdoorlife #landscapes #capturelandscapes #instagramtennessee @instagramtennessee #865life @865life #smokiesfriends @smokiesfriends

"Blue Flower Moon" rising over the Great Smoky Mountains, May 18, 2019. --- The full moon in May is also referred to as the "Flower Moon" due to the month of May being known for blooming flowers. However, this year's Flower Moon is also considered a Blue Moon. When there are four full moons within one season, the third is called a Blue Moon. This month's full moon is the third one so far during the Spring of 2019, and there will be one more full moon before the first day of Summer. Since there is usually only three full moons per season, Blue Moons are somewhat rare, hence the expression, "once in a blue moon." --- #greatsmokymountains #blueflowermoon #flowermoon #bluemoon #moon #instamoon #tnvacation #instagramtennessee #visitsmokies #smokymountains #greatsmokynps #smokiesfriends #gsmassoc #smokymountainoutdoors #smokymountainnationalpark #earthskyscience #sky_brilliance

"To gaze upon this prospect in the sunset hour, when the mountains were tinged with a rosy hue, and the immense hollow before me was filled with a purple atmosphere... was to me one of the most remarkable and impressive scenes I ever witnessed." - Charles Laman, speaking of the Smokies in 1849. The quote isn't for sunrise but it still fits the beauty that you see in this photo and the scene that I was honored to witness this morning... I can't tell you the number of times that I have gone by this spot - and never once noticed it until today. Some of you are probably head over heels in love with a friend that you never saw as more than a friend - until one day, you looked at him or her with new eyes. That fuzzy feeling is the best way that I can explain how I felt the moment that I spotted those amazing ridge lines in the distance... The Smokies are a close friend of mine, but today... Today I looked at their beauty, once again, with a fresh set of eyes. 💙 * Prints are available in my Etsy shop! Link in bio.

The cantilever barn located on the Tipton Place homestead was built in 1968 and is actually a replica of the original. This type of barn was common in the 1800’s and allowed a wagon to pull through the opening and unload hay or feed for the livestock. I believe the structure I was shooting from is original from the 1870’s. . . . . . . #greatsmokymountains #ipulledoverforthis #hey_ihadtosnapthat #ig_countryside #ig_awescapes #explore_countryside #trb_rural #raw_usa #raw_country #fotocatchers #rsa_rural #greatsmokynps #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #greatsmokynationalpark #greatsmokymountainspictures #tennessee_of_usa #tennessee #tennessee_life #instagramtennessee #onlyintennessee #amazing_shots #photo_hitchhiker #fotocatchers #mountains #photo_hitchhiker #country_features #explore_destinations_ #raw_country #explore_destinations_ #smokymountainphotography

This is the Abrams Falls in the Cades Cove District of the Smoky Mountains National Park. You can reach it by hiking 2.5 miles along a moderately difficult and ruggedly beautiful trial. I struggled with a couple things on the image, one was how to compose it and the second thing was how long of an exposure. For the composition I wanted the waterfall to be large in the image but I didn’t want to zoom in and sacrifice all the wonderful surroundings. I ended up shooting at 13mm but then I cropped the image a bit in post. I think I found a happy medium for this 20 ft waterfall. On the exposure I ended up using a 3 stop filter and getting a 1.6 second shutter time. I wanted a little bit of silky water but I also wanted some detail as well. I think the 1.6 seconds was just about right. Tell me what you think😁 . . . . . . #greatsmokymountains #ipulledoverforthis #hey_ihadtosnapthat #ig_countryside #ig_awescapes #explore_countryside #trb_rural #raw_usa #raw_country #fotocatchers #rsa_rural #greatsmokynps #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #greatsmokynationalpark #greatsmokymountainspictures #tennessee_of_usa #tennessee #tennessee_life #instagramtennessee #onlyintennessee #amazing_shots #photo_hitchhiker #fotocatchers #mountains #photo_hitchhiker #country_features #explore_destinations_ #raw_country #explore_destinations_ #smokymountainphotography #raw_waters #formatthitech #cadescove

I had a business trip in Tennessee and decided to take a little extra time on my way back home to visit the Smoky Mountains National Park. I arrived on Wednesday afternoon and then had a little bit of time Thursday morning. This shot is from Thursday morning. I was heading up to Clingman’s Dome (the highest point in the park) but by the time I got halfway up I was in the clouds so I turned around and as I was coming back down I seen this view and pulled over. This was a 30 second exposure and during the exposure another car pulled up behind me and did some light painting on the trees in the foreground. I really liked how it turned out😁👍 . . . . #greatsmokymountains #ipulledoverforthis #hey_ihadtosnapthat #ig_countryside #ig_awescapes #explore_countryside #trb_rural #raw_usa #raw_country #fotocatchers #rsa_rural #greatsmokynps #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #greatsmokynationalpark #greatsmokymountainspictures #tennessee_of_usa #tennessee #tennessee_life #instagramtennessee #onlyintennessee #mills #canon6d #amazing_shots #photo_hitchhiker #fotocatchers #mountains #photo_hitchhiker #country_features #explore_destinations_ #raw_country #explore_destinations_ #smokymountainphotography

A beautiful disaster: This morning, I woke up with intentions of putting myself together for a meeting later in the day - then hitting the road in time to catch the sunrise and rolling to the trail to explore before heading into Gatlinburg for said meeting. However... The morning turned into a disaster rather quickly... Starting with watching an insanely gorgeous sunrise from my car on the way to the mountains. 🤦🏼‍♀️ That fixed itself once I realized that some beautiful fog was lingering in the valley along with stunning light rays shooting down... When I finally made it to the coffee shop, way later that I planned - I realized that I had apparently put my pants on backward... How does one not noticed that kind of ridiculousness?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ So, I fixed that situation... Then... I headed to Cades Cove and to the trail only to find 4,387,208 Mustangs cruising the loop... (Ok, maybe that's an exaggerated number - but you get the point) So I aborted my plan, rolled down sparks and headed out of the cove. That's when the disaster of a morning all made sense... I spotted a fellow hiker... That ended up needing a ride because a friend was hurt on the trail and they were trying to get to car number one on a backpacking trip. So, we headed to Newfound Gap - and rolled up to one of the most beautiful days that I've ever seen there. It was a completely different plan that I had in mind - but I was able to help a member of our hiking community that was in need and it was topped off with an incredibly beautiful day! I'm sharing this rambling because it's the perfect example of how when everything seems to be going wrong - it's almost always going right... It just takes a little patience to see it all play out. So, if your pants are on wrong - your coffee is cold, you're running late and there are obstacles in your path.... Just keep rolling - it'll all make sense soon. 💙 *Prints available in my Etsy shop, link in bio.

Foggy dawn at Newfound Gap, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The wonderful folks from Pigeon Forge Tourism and Midwest Travel Journalists Association got up extra early to jump into the transportation provided by Pink Jeep Tours in hopes of capturing a beautiful sunrise at Oconaluftee Overlook and Newfound Gap. Heavy fog covered the sunrise but we hung around long enough for the fog to lift and break, giving us some magic moments of light interplaying with the mountain forest and rolling fog. Well worth the early wake-up and the trip. #greatsmokynps #visittennessee #pigeonforge #mypigeonforge #tennessee #pinkjeeptours #nytimestravel #latimestravel #mtja #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #newfoundgap #northcarolinamountains

I recently returned home from my annual photography trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for a few days with some buddies. We had a great time chasing waterfalls, looking for bears, and wishing Mother Nature would cooperate for sunrises, sunsets, and throw us a bone with a clear night or two for photographing the Milky Way. The latter just didn't happen and good color for sunrises and sunsets was either hard to come by or we gave up only to get fooled. We did end up with some good color on our first morning of the trip. We arrived at Cades Cove slightly behind schedule but found only one car in line 30 minutes before sunrise. We were stoked to be second in line! About 5 minutes later, a group of 4 or 5 cars pulled in behind us. A gentleman hopped out of the first car and walked around the car in front of us only to go scampering back to his. The line of cars behind us quickly zoomed by as the gate was already open. We followed suit and found ourselves as the only car at Sparks Lane for sunrise. We didn't get much of anything in the way of fog, but did get some nice color for a couple of minutes. @HippyTree #GreatSmokyMountainsNationalPark , #GreatSmokyMountains , #GreatSmokyNPS , #SmokyMountains , #GSMNP , #Smokies , #VisitMySmokies #NationalPark , #NationalParkService , #NPS , #CadesCove , #Nature , #NaturePhotography , #52WeeksOfNature , #BlackRapid , #865Life , #InduroPushFurther , #LongExposure , #LongExposurePhotography , #LongExposure_Shots , #LandscapePhotography , #Landscape , #Landscape_Photography_Planet , #LPM , #LandscapeCapture , #Landscape_Nightscape , #Next_Landscape , #HikingCulture , #Sunrise , #SparksLane

Super excited to report the 2nd flashing #firefly species of the year in #knoxvilletennessee : Meet Photuris fairchildi (probably)! Males PFs flash 3-4 times in a row, while Pyractomena borealis males, also out right now (last photo), flash once at a time. PF females mimic the flash of a PB female, luring in amorous PB males for a nutritious meal! While only PB has been reported in the #smokies yet, they probably both occur there. Photographer unknown. Reposted by @dannynash52 show the picture and photographer some love. • • • • • • A little bear and a big ole tree! By now, you’ve probably noticed, there’s no shortage of photographs of spring bear cubs. We are very blessed with some of the best wildlife photographers around and they consistently deliver images of wildlife for everyone’s enjoyment on FB, Instagram, etc. Perhaps when some people think of getting pictures of wildlife they think you drive around in the car and hopefully a bear family will cross the road in front of them or someone else will have spotted them and and there they are for everyone to get a snapshot. You’ve seen videos lately and that in fact does happen. This is the exception more than the rule however. The photographers I know that provide lots of these images often spend hours in the woods hiking game paths, hiking trails and even bushwhacking to find wildlife and not without its risks. Normally they’ve gotten up hours before daylight and traveled to the park to get out early and stay late and this is includes, for some, hours of driving from out of state. It’s the same with landscape photographers that sometimes hike miles in the dark to get to their destination for a sunrise or hike out in the dark after a sunset. It’s not always easy so I was thinking about the photography community around here and my hat goes off to these people. I’ve learned a ton from many of them and really appreciate them all and aspire to be like them in many ways. But most importantly, don’t forget we have an awesome Creator God that has given us the rich blessing of enjoying all He has created, “The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all,” Psalms‬ ‭89:11‬ NLT. I hope you enjoy your Friday and your weekend and all the little bear pictures your eyes can take in! 😊 #smokymountainbears #blackbears #bears #gsmnp #smokymountainphotography #greatsmokynps #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #instagramtennessee @instagramtennessee #865life @865life #smokiesfriends @smokiesfriends #wildlife #wildlifephotography
