It was about 3am when I started to make my solo journey down from The Great Smoky Mountain’s tallest peak, Clingman’s Dome. The air was brisk but silent with short bursts of fog flying through the air. I won’t lie, I wasn’t so relaxed - I was alone with no one in sight and the words of TN locals “be careful of the bears” lingered in my thoughts. I spotted this tree with the Milky Way hanging out on the side of it so I decided to lay down the tripod and take a few shots. This pretty little female Goldfinch is a frequent visitor to our feeder here in our mountain paradise. I love the little sounds she makes when she communicates with her friends and her mate. In this photo she looks at me inquisitively probably wondering why I'm so interested in her. I wish I could tell her that she and her friends make me smile. #birdsofafeather #natureisbeautiful #gsmnp #visitmysmokies #865life #smokymtnliving #brysoncity #liveoutdoors #visitncsmokies #peacefulsmokies #tnmountains #instagramtennessee #optoutside #friendsofthesmokies #gsmassoc #blueridgeoutdoors #natgeotravel #blueridgemoments #naturaltennessee #awalkinthewoods #blueridgemountainlife #tristaradventures #peacefulplaces #greatsmokynps #gatlinburgtnguide

I love moss! Seriously! I really do! It’s kind of a family joke. I told my kids one time when they were young that when I was growing up one thing I loved to do was to find moss when I was playing in the woods. “Moss” they said? Yes! You know it’s just such a pretty green color and soft to touch. It’s green color stands out amongst all the other greens in the woods don’t you think? They looked at each other and rolled their eyes. Still today I like to see it (check out the pic above 😉). So the kids always make fun and will make snide remarks “Hey dad you would’ve loved where we went today, there was moss everywhere” with a hee haw to follow or “Hey dad look! There’s some moss wanna go rub it?” Laughter would break out. Kids today. No respect! The Bible speaks of laughter and though you may not be in a place in your life where its very prevalent right now, those in relationship with God in whom all things were created (moss included) will one day laugh again. Take Job for example of all people it would seem he would have never laughed again after all he lost (Job chapter 1). “But look, God will not reject a person of integrity, nor will he lend a hand to the wicked. He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.” Job‬ ‭8:20-21‬ ‭NLT “We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.” Psalms‬ ‭126:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬ “A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance.” ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭3:4‬ ‭NLT‬‬ I’m hoping if you can’t laugh today you will soon. Have a very blessed day! 😊🙏🏻 #gsmnp #smokymountainphotography #greatsmokynps #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #nationalparks #nature_brilliance #naturephotogrqphy #allnatureshots #nanpapix #bestnatureshots #landscapephotography #landscape_captures #explore #outdoorlife #landscapes #capturelandscapes #instagramtennessee @instagramtennessee #865life @865life #smokiesfriends @smokiesfriends

As I walked the fields along Hyatt Lane last night around 7:30, the heat of the southern summer sun could still be felt on every inch of my skin... But after 14 days of not being able to step into my Smokies, even the humidity and the random face bumps by the gnats were a welcome feeling. A few people stopped in their vehicles to warn me of a “giant black bear and 2 cubs that were just down from me”... Yes, I was well aware of their presence as I’m sure they were of mine... But like so many times before there was a silent understanding between the Momma and I... I had no intention of interrupting her peaceful evening and she had no desire to interrupt mine. I was there for the softness of the sunset and the whimsical blooms of the Passion flowers. I was just about to make my way over to a batch of Tennessee’s state wildflower when this edge of the fence caught my attention. I stopped and wiped the wet from sweat bangs from my eyes... As I blinked, I had a quick vision of what life was like long ago in Cades Cove. I saw the worn hands of an Appalachian man, working hard in the same southern summer sun - with sunburnt shoulders and an aching back as he dug and dug... Placing fence post after fence post into the earth. A man that knew the hills of the Smokies like I never will, a man that is long gone today but whose spirit I can still feel... A man that will always be the face of these Appalachian hills. 💚

A Smokies Sunday Church bells are ringing, the choir’s singing. Singing the hymns that their grandmothers would hum to add joy to the hard work that had to be done... The children of the hills - laughin’, skippin’ and pickin’ wildflowers along the way to the churches where their fathers were saved. A sunny summer Sunday - often filled with rain showers and rainbows... How many Sundays do they have left? Only God knows. A day for rest, yes, but the fields still need to be mowed... Herders are heading back from Spence Field to join in down by the creek to celebrate the salvation that their spirits seek. Their sins washed clean by ice cold Smokies water... With promises to spend eternity with those that are already resting in peace. Loved ones that are gone but never forgotten. A hard life, a simple life - but a life where blessings are counted daily, prayers are said every night at their bedside and even when everything goes wrong, all is still right. All is right, on a Smokies Sunday. 💚

Part of the reason I enjoy backpacking so much is you never really know what's going to happen once you start down that first trailhead. You have a pretty good idea of most things: what you'll eat, how many miles until you setup camp for the night and maybe a general idea of the weather. But it's what you can't plan for that ends up making a trip special. Wildflowers, animals, stream crossings, getting socked in, torrential downpours and lightning storms that come out of nowhere, new friends and epic sunrises. Each adventure is always wonderfully unique, even if it doesn't go according to plan. . . . #mountains #mountleconte #sunrise #smokymountains #greatsmokynps #gsmnp #onlytennisee #tennesseeisfantastic #nationalparkgeek #instagramtennessee #tristaradventures #optoutside #hiking #backpacking #backcountry #nature #neature

The words of the Psalmist are on my heart tonight: “And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest... Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved (Ps. 55).”⁣ ⁣ [This video taken yesterday at Clingman’s Dome shows the clouds rolling in while the sun was still shining on ridges in the background. It was a cool 65 degrees during late afternoon while it was 90+ back home. At 6643 ft, Clingman’s Dome is the highest mountain in the Smokies and the highest point along the AT.] #greatsmokynps #clingmansdome #gsmnp

It was love at first sight and on a day that will forever be etched on the walls of my heart because it also the first time that I made the trek up to the top of Mount LeConte. It was September 18th of 2015. I had only been using a camera for 2 months and a year into my love affair with the Smokies. As I climbed the Alum Cave Trail with my friend Carol... I was completely blown away by the vast beauty that could be seen as we worked our way to the top. It was my favorite kind of day... A blue sky, fluffy white clouds day. Absolute perfection... And just as we reached the upper end of the trail we spotted one of the most beautiful wildflower blooms that I had ever seen... It so was very delicate and a picture of simplicity. With a closer look, I noticed the details that others would have never seen and truly appreciated with only a quick glance and their focus on the landscape that so often demands your attention on the Smokies 3rd highest peak. Yes, they were simple. They were simply beautiful. But, their uniqueness and design made them absolutely stunning! So, on that perfect day in September they became my most loved of all wildflowers... The Grass of Parnassus. 💚 When @markvandykephoto and I started putting together our 2020 Spirit of Place: Southern Appalachians Calendar and he agreed to let me assign attributes to each of us and place them with the months... I very selfishly snagged blooms for myself. 😏 Why? Well... Because this phenomenal wildflower needed the spotlight it deserves in August of 2020. 💚☺️ Order your calendar soon to guarantee that 16 months of beauty from Southern Appalachians will be in your home by September of 2019. 🍃 (They make great gifts too! 🎁) ** Link in bio! ** ( And yes, that why my crazy feline is named Parnassus. ☺️)

This past week was spent traveling around the Great Smoky Mountains with the goal of photographing wildlife, particularly bears. I saw a ton of bears, but failed time after time to get a good shot. That is until my final full day when I got to photograph this little guy. I just concluded a week long adventure in the Great Smoky Mountains. The primary goal of this trip was to try my hand at wildlife photography, so be expecting some of that coming up very soon 😉. . “Thin places are places of energy. A place where the veil between this world and the eternal world is thin. A thin place is where one can walk in two worlds – the worlds are fused together, knitted loosely where the differences can be discerned or tightly where the two worlds become one. Truth abides in thin places; naked, raw, hard to face truth. Yet we also find the comfort, safety and strength to face that in those same mystical spaces. Thin places captivate our imagination, yet diminish our existence. We become very small, yet we gain connection and become part of something larger than we can perceive. The human spirit is awakened and will grow if the body and mind allow it.” #thinplaces #clear #greatsmokymountains #ebbandflow #water #dontfighttheriver #choosemountains #womenwhohike #nps #greatsmokynps #naturephotography

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Psalms‬ ‭20:7‬ ‭ Most of us have seen the Ten Commandments and Ben Hur and the sheer awesome power of horses as they pulled carriages in games and in battle. I have always been in awe of horses ever since I was a young child. We would go to my uncle’s farm and he had a horse named Nancy. She was really impressive at least as a kid I thought she was and she gave me a love for horses. In biblical times horses were depended on by nations to lead them into battle. Here in Psalm 20 David uses chariots and horses as as an example not something to put one’s hope and trust in. “Part of the reason David refused to trust in chariots and horses was because God had commanded it in the Law of Moses that the Kings of Israel would not multiply horses for themselves, either for use in cavalry or to pull war-chariots (Deuteronomy 17:16). But,' say the Israelites, "we neither have chariots and horses to trust to nor do we want them, nor, if we had them, would we build our hopes of success upon that; but we will remember, and rely upon, the name of the Lord our God, upon the relation we stand in to him as the Lord our God and the knowledge we have of him by his name. Note, those who make God and his name their praise may make God and his name their trust. David drew a strong contrast. "They trust in those things, but our trust is in God." Matthew Henry What am I depending on for my strength to get me through trials and battles of life? Where do I ultimately place my trust or more importantly in whom do I place my trust? Where lies my security? PLEASE WATCH “PRINCE OF PEACE” BY HILLSONG ON YOUTUBE!
