A friend recently posed a provocative question that had me scrambling for an apt description: “What is love?” I began compiling a list that described it in my own words, which quickly became too long and simultaneously inadequate. And then I realized I might be able to sum it up best in opposite terms.
Love is something that, when it’s gone, leaves you with such a profound sense of loss that a once-clear and optimistic future suddenly becomes frightening, uncharted territory. Love is removed from our lives for many reasons beyond our control. But viewed through that lens, it’s something for which we should fight to the death, in the cases when we can. Even when it’s messy and unclear. Because in some way, when love dies, a part of us dies with it. And there is only so much of us to go around. -BA
