Aurora over Kirkjufell Probably the most photographed spot in Iceland. Yes, I went there too. I was camped in the area and when the aurora started I went here at midnight hoping it might be fairly empty. Nope....packed. 50+ people at midnight in the dark. Got a few shots and went elsewhere. If you are thinking of going to Iceland one thing to know is that if you have seen a location on social media......then so has everyone else. They will be packed. Luckily you can explore and find things off the "IG path". Sony A7S with Voigtlander 15 and Gitzo tripod A 14mm or 15mm makes a great aurora lens, especially if it is fairly fast. The Voigtlander 15 is awesome for landscape but at f/4.5 a little slow for aurora. 🍔 Our main goal for this trip was to get to see the Northern Lights at least once! It wasn’t easy, and it actually took 2 weeks, staying up late many nights, and 2 tours to be able to see them once... & a half! We say half cause the first time they weren’t very visible because the solar winds weren’t that strong that night! There are many factors that play into being able to see the lights, plus A LOT of luck & patience🙏🏽 Also, photographing them is quite complicated for amateur photographers like us (hence the bad quality pics😬), but it’s quite an indescribable experience! No words could ever do this beautiful phenomenon justice! ⠀ 🥖 Notre objectif principal pour ce voyage était de voir les aurores boréales au moins une fois! Ca n’a pas était pas facile, et il nous a fallu deux semaines, rester éveillé tard de nombreuses nuits et deux chasses guidées pour pouvoir les voir une fois… et demi! Une fois à moitié parce qu’elles n’étaient pas très visibles car les vents solaires n’étaient pas très puissants cette nuit! Il y a beaucoup de facteurs qui jouent pour voir les lumières et également BEAUCOUP de chance et de patience 🙏🏽 Pour des photographes amateurs comme nous, elles sont très compliquées à photographier (d’où la qualité médiocre des photos 😬), mais c’est une expérience tout à fait indescriptible! Aucun mot ne pourrait jamais rendre justice à ce magnifique phénomène! ⠀ 🌮 Nuestro objetivo principal durante el viaje era el de poder ver las Auroras Boreales por lo menos una vez! No fue fácil, tomó 2 semanas, varias desveladas y hasta 2 tours para al fin verlas una vez... y media! Media, porque en una de esas veces las auroras no llegaron a ser tan visibles, ya que los vientos solares no eran lo suficientemente fuertes esa noche! Para poder ver las auroras hay varios factores en juego, además de que se necesita MUCHA suerte y paciencia🙏🏽 Asimismo, fotografiarlas no es nada sencillo, sobretodo para fotógrafos principiantes como nosotros (lo cual explica la foto de baja calidad😬), pero realmente es una experiencia indescriptible! NEON SEA AND RAINING STARS: One of the most spectacular sights I saw on my trip were hundreds of tiny star-like bioluminescent phytoplankton scintillating like a starry sky in the Arabian Sea off the Vijaydurg Fort. It might sound like a scene from Avatar, but this natural phenomenon is real and takes place at select beaches around the world. Certain creatures both on land and sea can produce light through chemical reactions taking place within their bodies known as Bioluminescence. The bioluminescence results from a light-producing chemical reaction also called chemiluminescence. These particular species seen in the picture is a bioluminescent algae called Noctiluca, or sea sparkle. They react to any type of stress or change in tension, emitting light from their cells anytime something breaks a wave. We threw a few rocks in the sea to create the glowing flashes. Would you mind spending here the night under the stars? What a great night that was! We were staying at Ridgecrest that evening, about 1h30 driving from Alabama Hills. But I saw it would be clear skies that night, so I set the alarm at 1:30AM (yes, it was very hard waking up!). When arriving at 3AM and standing under the stars, I was completely high on adrenaline to start doing some astrophotography. At my first location (not this one), I was completely alone. Around 4AM, I went to my second location in the Hills, the one of this shot. To my surprise, there was already another astrophotographer @cyorkphoto. Thanks Cody for the fun talks in the middle of the night :-)! Always great to meet new people sharing the same passion! We stayed there for about 2h, until blue hour started to become too bright. As you can tell in the image, the sky is already turning blue-ish; and this was still more than 1h before sunrise! Brightest Road Na minha segunda noite na zona de Sanabria, sabia que tinha uma possibilidade bastante forte de ser brindado com uma das melhores chuva de meteoros do ano (Eta Aquáridas). Já a descer o longo caminho que nos leva de volta à civilização parei o carro só para contemplar uma última vez a via láctea antes do regresso a casa, acabei por ter o bónus de ao testar enquadramentos ser brindado com esta “estrela cadente”. EN On my second night in the Sanabria area, I knew I had a pretty strong chance of getting toasted with one of the best meteor showers of the year (Eta Aquarids). Already down the long road that takes us back to civilization I stopped the car just to contemplate one last time the milky way before the homecoming, and ended up having the bonus of testing the frames to be toasted with this "shooting star." Hello again, this is @cholivas and here is my second photo for today's takeover.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ This is stack of images taken last Summer during the Persied Meteor shower in Joshua Tree National Park, @joshuatreenps. My climbing buddy @the_cosmic_climber and I wanted to get a unique shot of the meteor shower so he climbed up a 50 ft vertical spire called the Aguille de Joshua Tree. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ After the first image of him he climbed down and I let the camera shoot until dawn. hoping to capture as many meters as possible. I used a 14mm lens so he looks really tiny atop the spire but it was pretty massive and he was pretty incredible to pose for this image. Over the 4-5 hours I had the camera running I managed to 22 images with some prominant meteors. The journey to my airbnb in Egilsstaðir was tough. I drove for hours from diamond beach up winding roads along the coast always seeing where I needed to go, but had to go further into the mountains just to drive back out to the coast again. I was starving thinking there would be a big village for food or even a gas station for snacks, but there was nothing at one in the morning. The View from the Mexico Express (3069) ~~~~~ Inside an old wooden train car, its window serving as a frame for a beautiful Mojave Desert mountain near the border of Mexico. I illuminated the interior of the train with a red light from my handheld ProtoMachines flashlight during the exposure. This was photographed during a week-long 1582-mile road trip with Mike Cooper. I don't know very much about this wooden train, but some guess that it is about 100 years old. Challege accepted! @tracyleephotos awesome idea! #natgeoguidelineschallenge #natgeo #natgeoyourshot There has been an uproar in the night sky photography community over a recent National Geographic article about stars over old trees which featured some poor examples post processing, including 1 photo which replicated part of the core 4 or 5 times. Given the strict posting guidelines of Nat Geo, the community, myself included feel this article is an insult to anyone who shoots the night sky on a regular basis. So we are posting our photos with the raw files to show that replicating the sky is not necessary! This shot was taken in Sept. 2018. My wife and I drove up to Lily Lake in the High Uinta mountains of Utah. When the weather is calm, the lake acts as a great mirror. We hiked around to the North side of the lake and got set up. We had limited time to shoot due to the moonrise. My original plan was a panorama, but shot somes singles as well. This was my favorite. We finished shooting and hiked back to the car. Canon 6D Mark 1. Sigma Art 35mm 1.4. Macrem tripod. 1st photo 15 seconds. F/2.2. ISO 6400. Shot in portrait. Processing done is Photoshop. Color balance done with curves and levels tools. Adobe camera RAW for other minor adjustments. 🌌My first Startrails of the 2019 season STORY In the second half of 2018 I upgraded my gear to the full frame and decided to buy the Samyang/Rokinon 24mm for the astrophotography. However I was able to shoot the Milky Way for one time only. So I was very excited for 2019. The weather was not nice in entire February but finally there were 2 straight nights of clear skies over the weekend. While searching for somewhere close to Salt Lake City, the abandoned bus in Delle UT came to my mind. On that day I had plenty of time so I decided to shoot startrails.
