. Design is about having everything cohesively coming together with everything else. No one stands by himself. Nothing stands out. Drawn by the irresistible power of architecture, we are here. The fact of being in the space at that specific moment feels like a designed performance as well. As everything comes to an end, looking retrospectively I realize that the thesis is as much an experience for me to go deep into another culture and to observe another way of living, as it is an argument, a hypothesis, or an architectural proposition. A lot of work is embedded in my visits to the floating villages on #tonlesaplake and the associations with indigenous people, though most of that is not shown in the floating drawings. For the past nine years, the more I’m engaged in the world of architecture, the more I’ve realized how little it can do to solve problems in the complex realities of our age. Yet what I could at least keep trying, and I am sure I will not shy away from taking the responsibility, is to call attention upon the marginalized, neglected places. Making them seen, heard, and discussed in every possible occasion, putting them relevant into a larger context, is what I urge to do. It’s not a grand proposal. It’s not a visionary fantasy. It’s never meant to be anything close to that. A Floating World is just a gentle move directed to the indigenous lives on the lake. And it’s a journey I’m glad that I’ve been through. #floatingurbanism #architecturethesis #princetonschoolofarchitecture

Gallery Event and Reception Tonight at 5:30pm in the North Gallery! Meet the Architect and Curator of "Recurrent Visions: The Architecture of Marshall Brown Projects" Spanning over a decade of practice, this selection of work by architect Marshall Brown reimagines the future by revisiting the legacy of modern architecture. Driving his diverse conceptual frameworks, Brown’s work moves between the various scales of domestic, institutional, and civic architecture to embody new relationships between the one and the many. Through his use of collage as an exploratory design method, Brown’s investment in the material history of architecture serves as a resource. The organization of the exhibition reflects this methodology through three themes that weave throughout Brown’s work: Recurrent Form reconfigures formal categories; Visionary Strategy challenges architectural mindsets; and Emergent Order considers complex phenomena. Featured projects include Dequindre Civic Academy, a monumental proposal for a charter school in Detroit comprised of reconfigured elements drawn from modernist megastructures; Holy City, a historically charged highway interchange in Chicago reimagined as a future eutopia; and Smooth Growth Plan for Washington Park, a project that embraces strategic responses for transformation through the consideration of abandoned properties and informal pedestrian movement. These projects represent the diverse outputs and perspectives that comprise Brown’s expanded view of architecture. The exhibition is curated by @karenkice and designed by @in_fo_co #princetonschoolofarchitecture #princetonsoa #princetonarchitecture #princetonu #architecture #architectureexhibition #marshallbrownprojects #marshallbrown Photo: Michael Vahrenwald ( @mvahrenwald )

Happening today @princetonarchitecture “Norma Merrick Sklarek: Redefining Public” explores the architecture of Sklarek, a seminal African-American practitioner whose design contributions and leadership manifest in various civic projects across the United States and abroad. As captured in the panel discussion themes of Authorship, Collaboration, and Leadership, Sklarek was a bold figure of “firsts” as she moved between scales of practice in various roles: from a project manager, to a collaborator and a mentor. The conference brings together multiple voices from Sklarek’s career--including colleagues, collaborators, and close friends--to cultivate further scholarship and discourse on both her career and the architectural discipline at large. #princetonschoolofarchitecture #princetonsoa #princetonu #architecture #normamerricksklarek #womenindesignandarchitecture

#regram from @larsmullerpublishers : We’re glad to announce the new publication "X-Ray Architecture" by Princeton professor and author Beatriz Colomina. Two years after her last book “Are We Human?,” Lars Müller Publishers teamed up with Colomina once more and presents an exciting exploration of X-ray technology and modern architecture in this generously illustrated book. Beatriz Colomina explores in “X-Ray Architecture” the enormous impact of medical discourse and imaging technologies on the formation, representation, and reception of modern architecture. It challenges the normal understanding of architecture by proposing that it was shaped by the dominant medical obsession of its time: tuberculosis and its primary diagnostic tool, the X-ray. If architectural discourse has from its beginning associated building and body, the body that it describes is the medical body, reconstructed by each new theory of health. Modern architects presented their buildings as a kind of medical instrument for protecting and enhancing the body. X-ray technology and modern architecture were born around the same time and evolved in parallel. While the X-ray exposed the inside of the body to the public eye, the modern building unveiled its interior, inverting the relationship between private and public. Beatriz Colomina traces the psychopathologies of twentieth-century architecture – from the trauma of tuberculosis to more recent disorders such as burn-out syndrome and ADHD – and the huge transformations of privacy and publicity instigated by diagnostic tools from X-Rays to MRIs and beyond. She suggests that if we want to talk about the state of architecture today, we should look to the dominant obsessions with illness and the latest techniques of imaging the body–and ask what effects they have on the way we conceive architecture. Are you Princeton ArcPrep’s next instructor? Princeton SoA is hiring the next Design Fellow to instruct Princeton ArcPrep. It is a two-year position in which fellows provide studio instruction to high school sophomores at Trenton Central High School as well as develop their own research on urban issues pertinent to Trenton. From Katie Zaeh, Princeton's inaugural Design Fellow and ArcPrep Instructor: “Teaching ArcPrep has been the most rewarding position because of the inspiring students I have mentored and the community ties I have fostered. Architecture gives students a new lens through which to interpret their worlds. It is exciting to work with students who bring their own experiences to the studio and realize the potential they have to make a difference their city. I also feel that by providing access to architectural training to high achieving, low income students, I am working to increase the diversity of the architectural profession. The future is bright!” . . Congratulations to Zhonghui Zhu ( @mikezzh )! A current post-professional M.Arch student and one or two recipients of this year's KPF ( @kohnpedersenfox ) Paul Katz Fellowship! He will spending 4 months of the coming year exploring, researching and writing in Tel Aviv, this year’s focus city. Zhu proposes: "For Tel Aviv, one of the most attractive places is its 14km shoreline along the Mediterranean Sea, which has become the very heart of Israeli secular life and remained a paradigm for Israeli seaside development. However, Tel Aviv was not originally conceived as a coastal city. Founded in 1909 as a separate Jewish suburb of Jaffa, the city first developed inland with its “back to the sea” and reached the shoreline only gradually over the course of its expansion. Through its course of development, Tel Aviv’s relationship to the sea has always been full of conflicting pressures and opposing visions. Through examining the historical forces that has shaped the architecture and culture of Tel Aviv shoreline as well as its current usage and influences on the city and everyday life, this research seeks to examine how different visions of Tel Aviv as a seaside city were articulated in terms of architecture and urban planning, and how Tel Aviv has invented – and reinvented – its seashore as both public space and private development, enjoyment and conflict, unification and divide, nation building and everyday leisure." . . From @princetonarchitecture #regram from @superspatial whose collaboration with graduate #architecturestudent Joon Ma ( @joon.h.ma ) was selected as a finalist for the Korean Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai: The proposal is a physical manifestation of the digital and the mechanical infrastructures that enable our Noosphere, the sphere of human consciousness and communication. The idea is to investigate the contrast between hardware and software, the intangible lightness of the cloud and the incredible amount of mechanical, physical and digital engineering to make it into a reality. The pavilion proposes to use e-waste to transform obsolete electronic objects into an archaeological topography, shaped as an amphitheater, that sets the pavilion in a future condition. The obsolete hardware parts form a platform of display for the much anticipated digital technologies to come in the volume resting on the amphitheater. Within the pavilion, visitors can meander around and create their own paths as the pavilion is strategically designed to be used as a tool to connect people. #architecture #competition #masterplan #architecturedrawing #digitalart #ewaste #architecturemodel #expo2020 #thebestnewarchitects #princetonschoolofarchitecture #designresearch #architecturaldrawing #imadethat #soarch #studyarchitecture #architecturestudent #superarchitects #next_top_architects #architecture #architectureschool #princetonu
