I was looking back through old images this morning and found the images from my first encounter with killer whales out here in Clayoquot Sound. We headed up the inlets toward Bedwell Sound (if I remember correctly) and found these two animals. It seems that like so many people out here, my first encounter was with Rainy and Wakana, or T011 & T011A. I work with at least 3 other people that saw these guys as there first, which is crazy considering the number of individuals we encounter each year. I've seen them multiple times after this moment, and they have over 100 days of visitation in Clayoquot Sound since 1992. They've already passed through Tofino this year, and I'm sure we'll see them a couple more times this year at least. They are certainly older KWs now: she is at least 55/56 years old, and he's at least 40/41 years old. It's amazing - and a bit of a relief - when we get to catch up with this pair throughout the season.
