Lamborghini Countach 500 S (1982-1885)
The styling of the Countach is one of Gandini's finest efforts. The proportions are perfect and it seems that every subsequent mid-engined V12 Lamborghini is a modern incarnation of it. The low nose is arresting and the rising haunches, and of course, those scissor doors are not just defining features - they're near-narcotic eye candy.
Back in 1982 saw the introduction of the Countach 500 S, any improved version on the Countach 400 S. This time Lamborghini stuck a more powerful and bigger 4.8lt (4,754 cc) (4.8 L) engine into the Countach 500 S. The bodywork stayed pretty much the same however the interior was given an update.
Like so many exotic Italian machinery, the Countach has never had a reputation for reliability. Hot-blooded, yes, but hot-tempered to boot but its 4.8lt V-12 makes 370 hp certainly carried enough of a punch to pin you back in the seat. Better than the power output are the theatrics that accompany it, that symphony of fire and thunder that is only found in an Italian V-12 bull.
The Countach became the poster boy and icon in the 1970's and 1980's. It is a fighting bull, a menace and a force to be reckoned with. Anyone who complains about it not being a great car is missing the point.
Over the course of fifteen years, just 2000 were made – a successful run, yes, but nothing like as many Aventadors as Sant'Agata was able to sell in just a few years.
