#SPYArtifact of the Day: Stirn’s Buttonhole camera, 1880s. Best known as C. P. Stirn’s “concealed vest camera" - invented by an American but sold by a German. The camera had a round brass body with the exposure dial (with or without clock hand) and the funnel type lens barrel gave it a unique appearance. . It had to be loaded with a round film plate, 14 cm or 17 cm in diameter. Hidden in a vest pocket, it shot through a buttonhole and held six photos. Users pulled a string to release the shutter. 📷: Tina Krohn . . . . . . . . . #internationalspymuseum #spymuseum #mydccool #spies #spy #camera #gadgets #spystuff #history #museum #buttonholecamera #spyhistory

On August 20, 1940 at 5:20 p.m., exiled Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky welcomed a man he thought was a friend into his private study in Mexico City. Moments later, Trotsky lay bleeding on the floor, victim of a grisly blow to the head that ended his life. • The would-be assassin was undercover Soviet agent Ramón Mercader who gained access to the heavily guarded compound of the world’s most famous political exile and killed him with an ax. • Nearly 79 years after Trotsky’s assassination, the infamous ax used to kill him along with a trail of additional evidence is now featured in the Museum’s new Lethal Action exhibit. • The artifact was donated to the Spy Museum, courtesy of espionage collector and founding board member H. Keith Melton, who spent years searching for it. • Explore the gallery for more stories and other intriguing additions to SPY’s collection. 📷: Erik Sharar. . . . . . . . . . #internationalspymuseum #spymuseum #museum #spy #spies #trotsky #iceaxe #assassin #stalin #history #dc #artifacts #spyhistory

#SPYArtifact : KH-9 Hexagon take up reel, US, 1971-1986. Courtesy of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). • From the 1960s to 1980s, the NRO created three satellite systems to spy on the Soviet Union from orbit: Corona, Gambit and the Hexagon. This film take-up reel was a component of the Space Recovery Vehicle (SRV) on the Hexagon (KH-9) imagery satellite. • During a mission, exposed film, covering 40 to 50 days of intelligence target images, was loaded onto the large film take-up reel. At the end of the reel, the film was cut and the SRV was ejected from the KH-9 satellite. • It parachuted down until snatched by a plane in midair. The film was sent to Kodak for processing and then to intelligence analysts to assess. See the HEXAGON aka “Big Bird” take up reel on display now! 📷: Erik Sharar. . . . . . . #internationalspymuseum #spystuff #spymuseum #spy #spies #hexagon #satellite #photo #declassified #coldwar #recon #NRO #space #topsecret #bigbird

#SPYArtifact of the Day: A-12 Full Pressure Suit, CIA, 1960s. Flying high helped keep spy planes out of missile range, but also out of breathing range. How do you keep a pilot soaring and alive? The purpose of this A-12 pressure suit (courtesy of the CIA Museum) was to provide a livable pressure atmosphere for the human body when the cockpit or out of cockpit atmosphere was too dangerous to the suit wearer. Without it, a pilot could die in 15 seconds. See this remarkable suit on display in the Spy Museum’s “Looking, Listening, Sensing” gallery. . . . . . . . . #spymuseum #a12 #flight #flightsuit #internationalspymuseum #cia #spy #spies #museum #artifact #history
